David Laurence
David Laurence is director of the MLA’s Office of Research and the Association of Departments of English (ADE). As director of the ADE, he serves as editor of the ADE Bulletin and is responsible for organizing the annual ADE summer seminar and coorganizing the joint ADE-ADFL summer seminar. As director of the Office of Research, Laurence oversees the MLA’s projects in data collection and analysis, including the association’s periodic surveys of doctoral student placement, departmental hiring, departmental staffing, and foreign language enrollments, and the annual analysis and report on positions advertised in the MLA Job Information List. Laurence has served as a consultant to the Humanities Indicators project of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. David Laurence holds a PhD in American studies from Yale University and an AB, magna cum laude, in American studies from Amherst College. Before joining the MLA staff, he was assistant professor of English at Stony Brook University.
